Welcome to Mortimer's Roadhouse: Your Local American Gem

Located in the heart of Poplar Grove, Illinois, Mortimer's Roadhouse is not just another eatery; it’s a spirited dive that embodies the true essence of American comfort food. Positioned at 105 W Grove St, Poplar Grove, IL 61065, this charming roadhouse invites you to unwind with its approachable menu and warm atmosphere.

What to Expect

Mortimer's Roadhouse is renowned for its classic American offerings that cater to a variety of tastes. Their starters serve as a delightful launchpad for your meal, featuring everything from hand-cut skinny fries to beer-battered cheese curds. I was particularly drawn to the Rueben Rolls—crispy won tons filled with corned beef, kraut, and Swiss cheese, paired perfectly with their homemade Thousand Island dressing. A true crowd-pleaser!

  • Chips and Salsa: Fresh, hot tortilla chips at only $2.99.
  • Sampler Platter: Choose any three starters for just $9.99—great for sharing!
  • Loaded Nachos: A hearty portion topped with seasoned beef for $6.99.

As my meal unfolded, I couldn't help but notice the flavors that celebrated local ingredients. The wings, either boneless or bone-in, are another highlight, just begging for craft beer pairing. With a full order of bone-in wings at $7.99 and rave reviews, you won’t be disappointed.

A Community Spot

As I settled in, I was reminded of the welcoming vibe described by patrons like Flipflops L., who appreciated the delightful personality of the bartenders and the delicious homemade ranch served with the fries. The intimate, dive-bar feel isn’t just about the food; it’s about the community. Regulars gather here not just for the affordable eats but for the familiar faces. Beth C. captured this sentiment beautifully, saying it’s a place where you can relax and let off steam without fear of unwelcome distractions.

Room for Improvement

While the atmosphere is lively and welcoming, it does carry a casual, somewhat rustic charm, which some might say needs a touch of updating. However, as Kendra O. highlighted, the cleanliness of the establishment, especially the women’s bathroom, reflects the staff's dedication to providing a good experience for patrons.

This is a compliment but it's a divey biker bar. Very simple. Wasn't expecting much but Bloody Mary was on point. Ordered wings and fries expecting bottled ranch. After talking to the bartender, she told me they pride themselves in creating homemade stuff. Ranch was awesome, fries were skinny fries and they were so good. Husband ordered a bacon cheeseburger and said it was cooked perfectly. This place was out of our way since we just happened upon it but we'd recommend! Bartender has great personality as well. That's all I got :)

Worth the wait! We showed up mid afternoon with 11 adults and 7 kids. Very accommodating. As the normal small town bar goes, the bartender is the cook. She kept us hydrated, and all of our food came out hot, delicious and worth the price. It needs a little updating inside, but the women's bathroom was very well maintained and super clean!

Morts is a great place. It is unfortunate that a vulgar patron and his skank girlfriend can leave drunken reviews because the staff is working to ensure the safety and experience for their patrons. If you exhibit disrespectful behavior and disregard for other to an insulting level, I would hope management would step in and protect the experience if other patrons. If you're going to act like a douchebag and be disrespectful, the fact that management doesn't tolerate it is a benefit. Folks can see through the falacy.

Are you looking for a place to call your own where the service is so great that you see familiar faces week after week? I've seen so many first timers end up showing up repeatedly because this place has the greatest vibe. Awesome bartenders, the drinks are good, and the karaoke is lots of fun. No one here takes themselves too seriously so it's a perfect place to end the day and relax. I've been here a number of times without my husband and never felt in danger from creepy people or drunks. It's just not tolerated here by the staff (or the patrons to be honest!)
